Prophetic or Pathetic

By: Angela Lee Price

Dr. Kevin Cosby is an extremely busy man these days. In addition to pastoral and presidential responsibilities at St. Stephen Church and Simmons College of Kentucky respectively, he teaches a class on church growth at the college.

Recently, Dr. Cosby spoke candidly about what critics are saying about church growth. “Too many preachers are pragmatic and want church growth at any cost,” Cosby said. The church has become more important than the Kingdom. “This is critical for the black church,” said Cosby. “The only salvation for the black community is the church. However, we have all these major mega churches, but they are often guilty of having a concern for their churches without any concern for the Kingdom. "

High on the critics’ list is a lost of the prophetic voice. Cosby said, “Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke truth to powerful people and institutions, and did not concern himself with the consequences. The 21st Century church is not prophetic but pathetic. We are court prophets, champions of the status quo which means you have blessed a mess. Guys like T.D. Jakes, Joel Osteen, Ron Parsley and Eddie Long are preaching personal fulfillment, and that’s the problem. If you shift your doctrine and are not faithful to the doctrine of the faith, you have no foundation, and Satan comes in and anything goes. “
Remember, it is not Buddha, Confucius, Muhammad, nor New Age that saves. Jesus saves!
